Akhil Gogoi gets bail in college defacement case

           




Akhil Gogoi, an Assamese Youth leader was granted bail on Tuesday in connection with a case of college vandalism. He was arrested on Friday, a day after the Gauhati High Court had quashed a detention order against him under the National Security Act. 

Akhil Gogoi has been lodged in Dibrugarh Jail since September, when he was arrested on charges of sedition and spreading religious animosity. Later, he was charged in 12 cases under the National Security Act.The government contended that Gogoi, while addressing a rally in Moran, had said, "If Hindu migrants from Bangladesh were forced upon Assam people, people here would be compelled to take up arms."

Akhil who is the leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) moved the High court challenging govt. the detention under NSA.

The court ordered, "It is directed that the Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam shall conduct a detailed enquiry involving all the persons, who had a role either constructive or advisory in the process leading to the order of preventive detention made against the petitioner and also as regards thUpon such enquiry being conducted, a proper analysis be made as to where and why such serious lapses have occurred and upon doing so, effective corrective measure be taken that such lapses and lacunas do not occur in future.

The opposition Congress party has welcomed the court's order and stated that its stand has been vindicated. Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia had met Gogoi in the Dibrugarh Central jail. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora said, "When we issued statement urging state government to release Gogoi, BJP ridiculed us, now the High court has provided relief to Gogoi.
